Cascade Brewing Barrel House

Just a few minutes from our house but it’s taken us more than a few months to make our way over.

For $8, we tried a flight of:

Test Flight IPA… a little weak for our hoppy taste at only 60 IBUs

Back to School Bitter… pretty good. On par with some of the bitters we’ve had recently, such as Coalition’s BUMP’S BITTER ESB (5.5% ABV, 55.6 IBU, 7.2 SRM)… but Bump’s Bitter is Better

Pub Crawl Porter… not great

Razberry Wheat… nice

plus a $2 sample of the

Cask Beer on tap: Tangerine… LOVE. Love. love.

then, we had full sizers:

Red Eye Rye  (him) & Tangerine (me).

The food was nice.

He had: Muffuletta $8 Ham, salami, mortadella, mozzarella, gruyere, basil, olive salad & house-smoked tomato on a ciabatta roll.

He was not impressed. It wasn’t terrible.

I had a bowl of Saison Beer Cheese Soup ($6). It reminded me of the Hickory Farms store in the mall in my hometown. As a kid, we loved to wander thru the U-shaped store, trying samples along the way. Near the back of the store was an entire wall devoted to soup mixes that were meant to be made with one of their specialty cheeses. There was always a crock pot full of something warm and creamy of which we’d get a tester in a tiny paper cup. I loved that packaged soup. Anyway. That’s what the Cascade Soup tasted like and I was transported in time back to the Valley River Center. I ate the whole bowl and sopped up the last bits with the bread that arrived with the DUET cheese and charcuterie plate ($12).

I love cheese and I love cured meats. The plate was delicious. He was sweet saying my homemade bread was better than the bread that arrived. I love him. And, I agree. Their bread was good but mine is better.

The cost of our dinner was $26. Our drinks totaled $21. Like I said, the food was nice. It was an adequate dinner but for $47 ($56 with tip) served in under an hour by a not too friendly server, we could have done better in P-town.

And, I have just a small complaint. When you take the time to beautifully make the charcuterie plate and house cure & pickle your own stuff, please take care to NOT serve your homemade jam and compote in tiny plastic sample cups (just like the ones from Hickory Farms, ironically).
